DSACR MOURNS PASSING ON OF FREE STATE GRIQUA COUNCIL LEADER – JOHANNES KRAALSHOEK

The Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Mrs. Limakatso Mahasa, joins the Khoi-San (Griqua) community in mourning the departure of Captain Johannes Kraalshoek who unfortunately passed away on 09 March 2022.

“Captain Kraalshoek was not only a traditional leader of the Free State Griqua Council but also a cultural figure who embodied a cultural heritage of our land. He dedicated his life towards the recognition and the development of the Khoi-San (Griqua) identity within the Free State Province”, asserted MEC Mahasa.

Born on 22 January 1933, Captain Kraalshoek was a church elder and visionary leader who led the formation of the Free State Griqua Council in 1974 and won the first successful Land Restitution Case in South Africa. He also served as the Regent for the National Griqua Royal House. Captain Kraalshoek also played a pivotal role in the formation of the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act (Act 3 of 2019).
DSACR dips its banner in honour of this true servant of the people. The Department conveys its condolences to his family, friends and colleagues. The Free State Griqua Council will host a memorial service for Captain Kraalshoek on 17 March 2022 at the Lutheran Church in Heidedal, Bloemfontein. Funeral arrangements will be communicated in due course.

“The Department will continue to work with the Free State House of Traditional Leaders in its quest to ensure the promotion and preservation of cultural identities and linguistic heritages that are found in the Free State. Cultural figures such as Captain Kraalshoek should continue to be celebrated as part of the preservation of this rich heritage of our province.

May the spirit of Captain Kraalshoek rest in eternal peace and may his family and his followers be comforted”, concluded MEC Mahasa.
