The Free State Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation hosted a Spelling BEE competition event to celebrate Literacy Week which took place from September 1-8, 2012.

Public libraries give them an opportunity to expand their knowledge through the use of printed and non-printed library materials. The department has embarked on a Spelling BEE competition for Grade 3 and Grade 6 learners.

The Spelling BEE competition helps learners improve their spelling; increase their vocabulary; learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. It allows them to gain valuable experience through the process of competing and evaluation.

The competition aims to assist young people to develop their talents and have a platform to display their abilities. Learners can also improve and develop the skills associated with good spelling habits. Libraries were invited to participate in the competition by entering school children from Grades 3 and 6.

The library-based eliminations took place at all participating libraries on July 20, 2012 and were followed by the municipality-based eliminations. All the children who survive the library-based eliminations at participating libraries and are in the same municipal areas will compete against each other.

The district-based eliminations took place from August 15-22, 2012. Children who were successful in the municipality-based eliminations competed against learners from other libraries in the same district.
